Classification

Postoperative stage in which infection occurs

Type I

In the first week (Sternal instability, no osteomyelitis/costochondritis)

Type II

Between 2nd to 6th weeks (cellulitis, osteomyelitis, mediastinitis, exposed wire, positive bacterial culture)

Type III

After 6th weeks to years (formation of chronic sinus tract or chronic osteomyelitis)
